Why plastic headlights turn yellow over time
One of the typical drawbacks of modern plastic headlights is the gradual yellowing of the factory protective coating. Under the influence of ultraviolet light, temperature changes and road reagents, the top layer begins to change colour.
As a result, not only does the appearance of the car suffer, but also the effectiveness of the optics — light passes through yellowed glass less effectively, reducing the brightness and clarity of the lighting. Fortunately, in most cases, this problem can be solved by external polishing of the headlight glass.

The condition of the Toyota Prado headlights before work began
A Toyota Prado with headlight glass problems came to our car lighting service in Kyiv. The factory protective coating on the upper part of the headlights had yellowed noticeably and, according to the owner, had begun to spread actively downwards. This already posed a risk of headlight deterioration in the near future.

Diagnostics and choice of restoration format
After inspection, the service specialists determined that the problem was concentrated exclusively on the outside of the headlight glass. The inside remained clean:
- no yellowing from the inside;
- no hologram effect;
- no microcracks in the upper area of the glass.
Therefore, it was decided to perform only external grinding and polishing of the headlight glass, without disassembling the optics or performing any internal work.

External polishing process and glass protection
Service specialists polished the headlights from the outside in several stages, gradually removing the yellowed and worn layer of the factory coating. This restored the transparency and neat appearance of the glass.
After polishing, a polyurethane anti-gravel film with UV protection was applied to the restored surface. It performs several important functions at once:
- protects the glass from re-yellowing;
- reduces the risk of scratches and chips;
- extends the service life of the polishing result.

Result: clean glass and renewed optics
After completion of the work, the Toyota Prado headlights completely got rid of the unpleasant yellow tint. The optics began to look much fresher, and the light became clearer and more uniform.
