When standard optics are difficult to restore
There are automotive optics that are quite difficult to restore using standard methods. This was the case with the BMW e46 Cabriolet that came to our car lighting service in Kyiv.
The car was equipped with factory halogen headlights, which had almost completely exhausted their service life. The quality of the light did not meet any safety requirements — the light output was weak and uneven.

The condition of the BMW e46 Cabriolet headlights before restoration
Before starting work, the overall condition of the car's optics was recorded. The light from these headlights no longer provided adequate visibility, so it was decided to comprehensively upgrade the optics using new and donor elements.

The chosen concept for light restoration
To significantly improve the lighting, it was decided to:
- use donor Hella 3R lenses;
- use original ignition units from donor headlights;
- completely abandon the old glass due to its uneven yellowing and the need for complex internal and external polishing;
- install new headlight glass;
- complete the upgrade by installing new Philips car lamps.
This approach allows for predictable results and high-quality light without compromise.

Dismantling of standard and donor headlights
After agreeing on the entire work plan with the car owner, the service technicians began the restoration. The BMW e46 Cabriolet halogen headlights were dismantled and unpacked, and the donor headlights with Hella 3R lenses were disassembled. After that, the Hella 3R lenses were carefully removed and prepared for installation in the updated optics.

Installation of lenses and preparation of optics
The prepared Hella 3R lenses were installed in the BMW e46 Cabriolet headlights. At the same time, the donor ignition units were prepared for further integration into the car's electrical system.

Installation of new lenses and film protection
The next step was to install new headlight lenses, which completely renewed the appearance of the optics and ensured maximum transparency.

After assembling the headlights and checking for fogging, the new lenses were covered with SunTek polyurethane protective film.

Returning the headlights to the car and installing the bulbs
After completing the mechanical work, the optics were reinstalled on the car. New Philips car lamps were installed in the headlights.

Connecting and adjusting the lights
Next, an auto electrician joined the work and integrated the ignition units into the car's electrical system. After connecting the updated headlights with Hella 3R lenses, the procedure of adjusting and regulating the light using a professional device began. Initially, the device showed an underestimation and displacement of the light beam. After step-by-step correction, the light was raised and precisely adjusted in accordance with the template parameters of the light-shadow boundary.

Result: light and appearance before and after
After all the work was completed, a final light projection was made onto a screen. The updated optics not only provided high-quality, uniform illumination of the road without dazzling oncoming traffic, but also radically changed the appearance of the headlights.
