Why plastic headlight glass needs polishing
During the operation of a car, plastic headlight lenses inevitably wear out. They are exposed to sand, fine gravel, road chemicals and ultraviolet rays. Over time, the following appear on the surface:
- scratches and chips;
- clouding;
- yellowing;
- damage to the factory protective lacquer.
In most cases, such cosmetic defects can be effectively eliminated with professional headlight glass polishing, which restores not only the appearance of the optics but also the quality of road illumination.

The condition of Toyota RAV4 headlights before polishing
The owner of a Toyota RAV4, whose headlights had noticeable cosmetic damage, contacted our car lighting service in Kyiv.

This condition of the glass not only spoiled the appearance of the car, but also acted as a filter, preventing the normal passage of light from the lamp. Over time, this can even lead to clouding of the inner surface of the glass.
In the most severe cases, double-sided polishing or even replacement of the headlight glass is required.

Different degrees of headlight wear
In this case, both headlights had different levels of damage:
- one had more pronounced wear;
- the other was in better condition but also needed restoration.
It was decided to start with external grinding and polishing of both headlights, and then assess the condition of the inner surface of the glass.

The result of external polishing
After grinding and multi-stage polishing with various pastes, it became apparent that the inside of the glass also had slight clouding. However, these defects were not critical and no longer affected the light output of the lensed optics.

Is internal polishing necessary?
Internal polishing requires disassembly of the headlights and is a more complex procedure. After assessing the additional costs, the car owner decided not to bring the glass to factory perfection, as the result already significantly improved the appearance and efficiency of the light.
This decision is often optimal when internal defects are not critical.

Protection of restored headlights
To preserve the result for as long as possible, the service technicians covered the polished glass with SunTek polyurethane protective film. It:
- protects against minor mechanical damage;
- reduces the effects of ultraviolet light;
- slows down re-clouding.

Result
After polishing, the Toyota RAV4 headlights:
- became significantly clearer;
- improved light transmission;
- restored the car’s neat appearance;
- gained additional protection.
Headlight polishing is one of the most effective ways to quickly restore optics without expensive repairs or replacement.
