Mazda CX-5 LED optics: the reality of operation
The Mazda CX-5 is a relatively new car with new-generation optics that actively use LED technology. In theory, such solutions should have a long service life.
However, the Car Light Design car lighting service is increasingly faced with complaints about the failure of LEDs in the front headlights of the Mazda CX-5, in particular in the LED eyelash — the DRL function.
From our point of view, either the service life of such components should be longer, or the manufacturer’s warranty obligations should cover a longer period of operation.

Car with non-working DRLs
Another owner of a Mazda CX-5 contacted our service with a problem of burnt-out LEDs in the front headlight. The main lights were working properly, but the daytime running lights (DRL) in the form of LED eyelashes were inactive.

A typical problem, a familiar solution
This malfunction is not new to our specialists. We have previously replaced LEDs in Mazda CX-5 headlights and similar models from other brands.
In fact, we can talk about a systemic problem with LEDs in this type of optics. But we have what we have, and within the framework of post-warranty repairs, repairing the LED eyelash is the optimal solution, significantly cheaper than replacing the headlight assembly.

Headlight disassembly and diagnostics
To repair the LEDs, the headlight was removed from the car and opened along the factory seam. After separating the glass from the body, it was possible to access the LED module and perform a detailed diagnosis.

During the inspection, it was clearly established that:
- the LED controller is serviceable;
- the cause of the malfunction is burnt-out LEDs.

Re-soldering of LEDs
After confirming the cause of the malfunction, the specialists proceeded to re-solder the failed LEDs. The work was carried out in compliance with temperature regimes and with subsequent protection of the soldering areas. After replacing the LEDs, the module responded correctly — the LEDs lit up again in normal mode.

Headlight assembly and inspection
After repair, the headlight was prepared for assembly and assembled with a new sealed seam. After the technological crystallisation time of the sealant was completed, the headlights underwent mandatory testing for the absence of prerequisites for the appearance of internal condensation. After ensuring the tightness and serviceability of the optics, the headlights were reinstalled on the car and connected to the electrical circuit.

Repair result
As a result of the work performed:
- the LED eyelash (DRL) has been fully restored to working order;
- the headlight is working normally;
- the owner avoided an expensive headlight replacement;
- the optics retained their factory appearance.
LED repair is an effective solution for the Mazda CX-5 in cases where the warranty is no longer valid and the problem is localised in the LEDs.
